Snowy White and the Pink Floyd Connection
When you think of the nexus of classic rock and blues, you might not immediately picture Snowy White, but he’s a musician who's perhaps one of the hidden staples in this network, particularly due to his work with Pink Floyd. Our chance encounter at a hotel in Chicago during the 'In the Flesh' 1999 tour launched the beginning of our in-depth conversation. Snowy remains one of the most grounded and personable figures in an industry often characterized by lavish personas and egos.
REG EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW!
Over the years we have sat down with a spectrum of artists that have orbited the world and sounds of Pink Floyd, including the likes of Ron Geesin, and Mark Fisher. In the past, REG touched on conversations with Snowy White, but nothing like this. Thanks to Snowy's approachable persona, we managed to secure this opportunity to delve into his career's past, present, and future with unprecedented candor.
A Musician's Humility
"Um I've never gotten into being... some sort of star for want of a better word... cause I've never been one really... so it's pretty easy not to get into that sort of... You see the reason I got into music was because I liked playing, not because I wanted to be some sort of star or rock star, or you know, a big name. I mean in a way, it's nice to have some sort of success like that but it's not been why I do it. So I've never felt the need to be anything other than I am, which is just an ordinary guy... really," Snowy admits with a laugh.
Remaining Unaffected
Discussing the lack of ego conflicts within the tour band, Snowy highlights the value Roger Waters places on humility, resulting in a cohesive and grounded touring crew. Influenced by early blues, Snowy describes his self-discovery of music greats like John Mayall and Eric Clapton, which eventually hooked him on the guitar. Peter Green, of Fleetwood Mac, later became his primary influence as his music career progressed.
From Blues to Pink Floyd
Unfamiliar with Pink Floyd beyond the periphery of his blues-centric world, Snowy's journey with the band began as serendipitously as playing on "Pigs On The Wing" after simply being in the right place at the right time. With no formal audition, Snowy's reliability and “normal guy” demeanor were enough to secure him a spot on both 'Animals' and 'The Wall' tours.
The Serendipity of Success
Snowy's career continued to thrive in surprising ways, as he never intended his song "Bird of Paradise" to define him. Yet despite its success, he shifted his effort back to blues music with the Blues Agency band, emphasizing his love for instrumental over commercial appeal. His genuine approach reflects through his music as well as his interactions with legends, fans, and the journey of life as a touring artist.
Endearing Anecdotes
The interview with Snowy White encapsulated not only a discussion of his career and personal philosophy but also brought forth heartfelt anecdotes. Narrating the time Roger Waters buzzed their own outdoor concert with a low-flying jet or the storm that halted their Pennsylvania show for three hours, Snowy shared experiences that shaped his perspective on music, performances, and camaraderie.
Looking to the Future
With aspirations to focus more on the American music scene and continue collaborating with Roger Waters, Snowy White looks forward to future endeavors with his characteristic enthusiasm intact. With new management and fresh opportunities on the horizon, he remains as passionate about his craft as ever, ready to inspire a new generation of fans with his down-to-earth style and timeless guitar solos.
The Integration of Travel into Rock Stardom
Snowy's tales from on the road illuminate the integral role of travel in the life of a renowned guitarist. From hotel encounters to flights on private jets, the world of touring brings its own adventures, shaping the experiences that resonate through an artist's life and work. As we bid farewell to Snowy, we're reminded that the music industry isn't just about the limelight; it's about the journey—across countries, through hotels, and the unscripted moments that make each interview and performance unique and memorable.
